What is a Grey Nun?

A Grey Nun is a woman who has dedicated her life to God and God's people through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. For a Grey Nun, the attraction of the charism and inspiration of St. Marguerite d'Youville, Mother of Universal Charity, has drawn her to join with other women who share this same spirit. With them, she tries to follow Jesus, using her gifts and talents to help bring about the reign of God, by loving others and striving to alleviate the suffering of those who are poor and needy in our world.

Among us are nurses, administrators, visitors of the sick and elderly, drug and alcohol counselors, teachers, campus ministers, a college president, a physician's assistant, social workers, professors, a physical therapist, family counselors, spiritual directors, and pastoral assistants.

We work with victims of abuse, those who live in poverty, men and women who are incarcerated, and people with physical and mental challenges.

We are sponsors of an assisted living facility, a grade school, and a high school. and we co-sponsor a shelter and day care for women and children. Our Motherhouse is dedicated as a Nuclear Free Zone and is available not only to our sisters, but also to others seeking space to gather for learning and promoting peace, reverence of life, ecological responsibility, spiritual renewal and deepening of prayer.

Over the last two decades, we have declared our properties Nuclear Free Zones and taken a corporate stand in favor of debt relief for developing nations, in support of the principles of the Earth Charter, and against capital punishment.
