As you may know the bipartisan Senate Bill 744, Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 recently passed the Senate. While it falls short of what we wanted, it is a step in the right direction. Click on the link for the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) stating their response to this bill. Archbishop Chaput of Philadelphia, recently reviewed Immigration and the Next America a new book by Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles on the same subject. Both are important, concise and good sources of information to assist you in responding with an informed conscience. The next step is for the House of Representatives to work on its version of the bill. Another good source of information on this subject is the website www.justiceforimmigrants.org.
The Church in the U.S. designated June 30, 2013 as a day to pray for justice for immigrants. The GNSH Motherhouse incorporated this intention into the Sunday liturgy. Let us all make this a daily part of our prayer intentions remembering that all life is one, and what we do/to for one life, we do/to for all life.
