Meeting of the Derby Group- September 28-29, 2013

Written on: October 21, 2013

A gathering of Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, known as the Derby Group, met in Skaneateles Lake  for their annual meeting.  The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed the view of the lake from Stella Maris Retreat House.  Sisters Marian Adrian, Diane Bardol, Marita Campbell, Pat Connolly, Mary Brendan Connor, Ceil Cosgrove, Pat Kelly, Rita Margraff, Dolores O’Dowd, Mary Salvadore, Sheila Stone, and Eileen White shared prayer, meals, serious conversation and quiet moments.

This annual meeting begins  with a time to “catch up” with one another – to share life since the previous meeting along with recent involvement in social justice issues.  The stories are always inspiring. The members of the group have a firm commitment that  to working with the poor, the disadvantaged and taking time to write to senators and representatives about issues such as immigration.

This year’s topic was the of Empowerment of Women.  Those gathered listened to the presidential address given by Sister Florence Deacon at the August, 2013 LCWR meeting.  She spoke of her own life and how she had been empowered as a woman by the documents and proceedings of Vatican Council II.  The Derby group made a commitment to write to several people who inspire others by their support of women’s issues.

The next meeting is planned for September 27-28, 2014 at Stella Maris Retreat House in Skaneateles, NY.  The Group is open to membership – so if you are interested in making a commitment to meeting and to action on behalf of justice, contact Marita Campbell to receive more information and register to attend. Please put “Blog-Derby Group” in the subject line.
