Sister Dorothy Dunn (Sister John Marie) was born and raised in the New York City area. The kind and gentle way of her cousin, Sister Helen Dorothy Philip, was a strong influence on her decision to enter the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. She was the first Principal at St. Norbert School in Paoli, PA, when the Grey Nuns assumed that mission. St. Norbert’s has a warm place in her heart as she spent many years there and always felt supported by the parents. Her ministry as an educator took her to St. Pius X High School in Atlanta, Immaculate Conception School in Lowell, MA, and schools in the Long Island area including Blessed Sacrament and St. Leo’s.
She enjoyed her years in Buffalo, NY, at Holy Angels School where she taught 8th grade. For more than twenty years, she served in Pastoral Ministry at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Bayside, NY, and then continued to serve the homebound elderly as a volunteer. She resides at the Motherhouse in Yardley, PA.
My life as a Grey Nun has been happy and joyful. Every life has its “ups” and “downs” but my life has been filled with mostly “ups.” I look forward to this celebration of 70 years as a Grey Nun with much gratitude for my beloved parents who permitted me to enter the convent at age 16. They, along with my two loving sisters, encouraged and supported me in every way through my 70 years of religious life. I am grateful to my loving God who called me and has sustained me with deep and abiding love. This life has fulfilled my longing for and satisfaction with a life lived for God.
We will be featuring all of our 2014 Jubilarians prior to the Congregational Jubilee celebration May 17 in Yardley, PA. Collectively these 15 women have served God and His People for 900 years! God Bless them and their families for the gift of their generous hearts and lives.
