Sister Eileen White 50th Jubilee

Written on: May 15, 2014

Sister Eileen White (Sister Michael Eileen) loves Philadelphia, the home of her birth. Though born in Philadelphia, she spent her early years in Boone, North Carolina before returning to Cardinal Dougherty High School where she met the Grey Nuns. As an educator, she taught at Holy Angels Academy in Buffalo, New York and at Grey Nun Academy in Yardley, PA before answering the call to serve in Lima, Peru. Eileen’s concern for social justice issues prompts her to use her writing skills to call attention to the needs of the poor. She served the congregation in a leadership position prior to assuming her position as resident coordinator at Dawn’s Place, where she works with women victims of commercial sex exploitation. This ministry puts her in touch with some of the most vulnerable people and as Eileen says, “allows me to love them.”

My life as a Grey Nun has been blessed and I pray that it has mostly been a blessing to my community and to those with whom I have lived and served. I have been inspired, challenged, and supported by my sister Grey Nuns.  I see God’s Provident care in all the twists and turns, joys and even dark days of my life.  In this “golden” year, I celebrate the decisions I have made – to join, to stay, to go where sent, to choose where to go with the blessing of Leadership, to be chosen.  Every road taken has helped lead me more deeply into the Heart of Jesus – the One I have sought to know since forever. I see this Jubilee as an opportunity to re-commit myself to be for others, to find God in everything and everyone, and to listen for God’s voice in whatever way that comes to me. I’m delighted to have lived in this community as we grew in our perspectives on the world, on justice and peacemaking, on diversity in humanity and in the cosmos. What a great time to have lived these 50 years as a Grey Nun!
