Vocation Ministry Update

Written on: January 28, 2015

Over the next few months there are many activities to keep the Vocation Ministry team busy. In Buffalo, Sisters Donna Lord, Sheila Stone and GN Associate Mary Jane Key will represent the GNSH at the Diocese of Buffalo Youth Conference along with other Religious Congregations. The collaborative spirit of this group is a great example to the youth of Buffalo!

Sisters Barbara Harrington and Mary Finnick will be heading to D’Youville College at the end of February to help the students kick-off their fundraising effort for SOIL in Haiti. Although this is not a “vocation” event, it certainly helps to build the culture of vocation by showcasing current activities of the GNSH. Our advocacy efforts are an important way to reach young adults by connecting their concerns with elements of the Faith.

Maryellen Glackin, along with a Brother of the Sacred Heart, Mike Migacz, will head to North Carolina to connect with Sister Eileen Spanier and the students served by Campus Ministry in the Charlotte Diocese. Maryellen and Mike will spend a week visiting a variety of campuses and finish with Give Your Heart Away Weekend, February 13-15, a service based retreat.

Maryellen has also been participating in an out-reach to girls at a local high school who spend their lunch hour once a month talking with 2 members of Religious Congregations. The students requested to learn different styles of prayer. This forum provides a more personal way to talk to the students than large classroom visits. Of course, those are going on, too, in many schools  along with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Junior Retreat Program and Gift of Mission, a collaborative effort of Philadelphia area vocation directors.

Our outreach to young Hispanics in the Philadelphia area met with a level of success on Sunday January 18 when almost 20 young adults attended a meeting at a local parish. Please pray for the continued success of this out-reach effort.

In-house, we are planning a series of conversations with the Motherhouse Sisters based on the presentations from the recent NRVC Convocation.  Sisters will be given copies of the talks to read ahead of time to nurture the discussion and Maryellen will provide the Vocation Ministry perspective.  If you would like copies of the articles and the list of talking points, Maryellen will be happy to email these to you as they are available.

Please continue to pray for Vocations. Your prayers are powerful and an important contribution to this ministry.
