Sister Faith Marie McGahan (Sister David Martin)- 60th Jubilee

Written on: April 19, 2015

Sister Faith Marie McGahanBuffalo, New York, is the city of Sister Faith Marie McGahan’ s (Sister David Martin) birth and where she spent her childhood and most of her years in religious life.  Faith, her given name, was the youngest of three daughters born to George and Catherine McGahan.  The McGahan’s attended Holy Angels Parish which was staffed by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate whom she came to know and admire.  In the Parish School, she met the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart and when she attended Holy Angels Academy for high school, again had the Grey Nuns as teachers.  With the exception of six years in Lowell, Massachusetts, all of her ministry years were spent in New York State. Sister Faith returned to her alma mater, Holy Angels Academy where, serving in the front office, she was a welcome presence with her cheerful smile.  The students looked forward to seeing her first thing in the morning and benefited from her sympathetic ear. This assignment lasted more than thirty years before she retired.  She continues to live in Buffalo and provides service to her sister companions.

As I ponder my 60 years as a Grey Nun, I am grateful for the many Grey Nuns who guided me and showed me what it means to be a true daughter of St. Marguerite D’Youville.  My very dear friend, Sr. Elizabeth Ann Brown, was there for me along the way.  Countless students, parents and those with whom I worked hold a special space in my heart. I offer my thanks to them and I ask God to bless them for all they have been for me.

Congratulations Sr. Faith!! I check the wbsite from time to time to see what has become of the Sisters. This is the first time I have been here since HAA closed.

Your face in the office was always a welcome presence and I loved talking to you. Your kindness and words of advice meant so much to me and went a long way to a girl who came from a very troubled home. Some days your kind words were the only nice things I would hear. Thank you.

I was a student at Blessed Sacrament School in Jackson Heights, NY where we were taught by the Grey Nuns (1948-1957). We travelled yearly to the motherhouse in PA every spring. I can’t believe we share the same surname! Was your dad a State Senator? My father was the youngest son of Irish immigrants.

Congratulations on your 60th Anniversary! God bless you!
