Sister Mary Dee Smith (Sister Peter Michael)- 50th Jubilee

Written on: April 19, 2015

Sister Mary Dee SmithSister Mary Dee Smith (Sister Peter Michael) is a Philadelphia native who met the Grey Nuns while she was as a mathematics teacher at Cardinal Dougherty High School.  After entering the congregation, she received a Master of Science degree from Illinois State University and continued a career in education and later administration.  For thirty years, she served in the Archdiocese of Baltimore at Archbishop Keough High School, Seton-Keough High School and at Resurrection St. Paul School, where she served as Assistant Principal.  She also had experience at the college level at both Sacred Heart Junior College in Yardley, PA, and D’Youville College in Buffalo, New YorkKodiak, Alaska, benefited from Mary Dee’s time there.  During her retirement years, Mary Dee has turned her skill to cooking and has become something of a gourmet chef.

It wasn’t until about age 26 that I finally said, “yes” to the special call, to “sell all” (in my case a new shiny red VW) and to “come follow me”.  Throughout these fifty years, I have been greatly blessed, realizing that even times of struggle and darkness are graced moments bringing a firm awareness that at the very base of me, I am rooted in the One who first called me.  With the support, love and guidance of sister Grey Nuns, my life has been rich and still open to further possibilities for contemplation, service and praise.  Though we are few and older now, I pray that the legacy of Grey Nuns will be long lasting, that in being faithful to the challenges of each new moment, we will continue to shed light, bringing about stirrings of new life, new and creative beginnings.
