Sister Maureen O’Hara (Sister Shaun Marie)- 60th Jubilee

Written on: April 4, 2016

Sister Maureen O'Hara - croppedPlants and all that grows are Sister Maureen O’Hara’s (Sister Shaun Marie) passion. After a long career as an elementary school teacher and administrator, she brought that passion to her work with the Penn State Cooperative Extension Urban Gardening Program, helping green thumbs and beauty multiply in inner city Philadelphia. While living at the Motherhouse, she was often seen kneeling in the fragrant flower beds which she had planted. For her, the simple act of gardening and the greatness of God are clear to her. Gardening is a daily prayer and meditation. She presently resides with other Grey Nuns at Lafayette Redeemer which is in close proximity to acres of parkland.

These years have been times of unexpected events both of blessings and times of deep spiritual depths. My Grey Nun companions and their extended family and friends have buoyed me along these 60 years. May I say with gratitude how much I love you all, always have and always will.

Sister I was a student at St. Cornelius Grammar School in Long Beach CA for 8 years. You were my 8th grade teacher and the principal. I often wonder where you and some of the other nuns went, Sister Ann Bernadette and Sister Perpetua. I loved you and those sisters although Sister Campion took a dislike to me in 3rd grade. You were a great example in my life especially since the family broke up when I was in 6th grade.

I am wondering if you ever taught school in Dearborn , Michigan. I’m looking for one of my favorite teachers.
