GNSHappenings in June

Written on: June 21, 2016

The Plaza Greys shared a lovely evening down in the community space at our apartment complex — celebrating the jubilees of Sisters Marlene Butler, Cathy Bleiler, and Diane Bardol.   After a tasty spaghetti dinner and ice cream novelty dessert, we listened to the Jubilarians share memories of early and later ministries, community life, and special graces all along the way.

The last of Holy Angels Academy students (freshman when the school closed) are graduating in 2016.  Sister Karen Marie, GNSH attended the graduation ceremonies on June 5, at Mount St. Mary Academy, Kenmore, New York. Of the 98 graduates, 25 had been freshman at HAA.

Hanni & KarenIn addition to recognizing the valedictorian and salutatorian, only one more award was given: The Mount St. Mary Award. This award, given by administration and faculty, recognizes the student who most exemplifies kindness, spirit, and service.  This year’s recipient (not known until the moment of presentation) was Hanni Htat, a former HAA student. Hanni received long and loud applause from her graduating class, as well as a standing ovation. Hanni has a scholarship and will attend St. John Fisher College in the fall.

At a reception afterward in the school gym, the former “angels” all proudly showed Sister Karen Marie the blue HAA rings they were all wearing! Some planned on going over to 24 Shoshone to take pictures on the lawn.

An interesting note about Hanni—she is a Burmese Catholic, recently confirmed, having chosen Marguerite after Marguerite d’Youville, for her confirmation name.  Hanni, her parents and siblings attend Our Lady of Hope Parish on Lafayette and Grant Streets, the former Annunciation Parish, now staffed by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, who live in Holy Angels Rectory.

After the Feast of the Sacred Heart, Sisters gathered together at the Plaza to have a social and light supper. It was a pleasant evening of reminiscing about the Yardley Motherhouse, sharing funny stories and just enjoying each other’s company. Many thanks to Sr. Marlene Butler for being the hostess.
