Though born in New Jersey, Sister Julia Christine Lanigan met the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart in Lowell, Massachusetts where her family relocated. With a degree from D’Youville College in nursing, she served in various aspects of health care including ministry at Hepburn Hospital and St. Lawrence State Hospital in Ogdensburg and Kodiak Island Hospital in Kodiak, Alaska.
Her ministry changed when she was asked to assume responsibilities for the finances of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart and served as both Assistant to the Treasurer and then as Treasurer while also doing pastoral ministry at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Trenton, New Jersey. With her knowledge of finances and institutions, she has assisted many other religious congregations with their future planning.
In 2008, she assumed the position of President of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, a position which she currently holds.
My life as a Grey Nun has been a graced experience of learning to live and walk in the path of love day by day. It’s wonderful to be walking with others who share this quest and who thirst for justice that’s ordered according to love and right relationships. I thank God for this gift of life—and for drawing grace and beauty even from my most imperfect ways and days of living it! I look forward to this celebration of 50 years —a moment to pause from our work simply to rejoice together with prayer and laughter and song, gratefully mindful of God’s faithfulness, mercy and love.
Congratulations, Sister Julia! I know my Aunt Peg (Sister Sharon Walsh) and Sister Elaine are looking down with great admiration for you, too. I hope you continue to enjoy your journey of faith and love.
