A huge thank you to everyone who responded to the request to write to students attending the “Give Your Heart Away Weekend” in North Carolina. The letters were displayed for the students and campus ministers to read. They were a huge hit and the kids were obviously touched and grateful for your notes and prayers for the weekend. (This was one of the efforts we undertook as part of Project Compassion. The results of two other projects can be found on GNSHappenings.)
Sixty students attended the Give Your Heart Away weekend of Service and Retreat. Maryellen Glackin accompanied a group of 4 who served at Purple Ribbon Thrift Store. Purple Ribbon was begun by a woman who escaped a domestic violence situation when only to discover that she was pregnant. She was so grateful to the program that allowed her to stay through her pregnancy, that she decided to open the thrift store as a way to give back. The staff members and volunteers are all survivors of domestic violence. Despite the tedious work of sorting and hanging clothing donations, the students who spent their service day at Purple Ribbon were deeply moved by the experience.
Pictures from the weekend will be available on our Flickr page.
Prior to the Weekend, Maryellen and Sister Pat Pepitone, RSM were able to visit 2 campus ministries in the Diocese of Charlotte, UNC Charlotte and Davidson. We enjoyed a home cooked meal with the students and had an opportunity to talk about religious life in general and our particular Congregations. The students asked some very good questions and seemed glad for the opportunity to hear about the unique call to religious life for both women and men.
