Sister Bernadette Marie (Carolyn) and her sister, Marilyn, were twin daughters born to the Lalonde family in Ogdensburg, New York. Sister Bernadette was educated by the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart in both elementary and high school before she entered the congregation. In her early years, she taught in elementary schools in Eden, New York, and the Jackson Heights, New York, area.

She returned to Ogdensburg and worked at the hospital in the x-ray department before going to the Grey Nun Motherhouse in Yardley, Pennsylvania, where she served in many capacities, one of which was sacristan. Sister Bernie, as she is known, is a person who always looks for ways to be of service to others. She often was the receptionist and telephone operator at the front desk, greeting all those who came to visit, from the mail deliverer to sisters’ guests. She resides with many other of her Grey Nun Sisters at Holy Redeemer Lafayette in Philadelphia where she continues her apostolate of service.

It is hard to believe that it is my 60th Jubilee as a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart. These years have been filled with many blessings, experiences, and graces. I thank my God for my vocation. God ‘s plan for me to be called to the religious life is a gift. My devotion to the Sacred Heart and to St. Marguerite d’Youville helps me to create a compassionate world as I live each day serving others. God has ‘held me in the palm of his hand’ through the loving kindness of my sisters. The opportunities for prayer and retreats led me closer to the Sacred Heart. I will continue to be faithful to my vows and all I have been called to be as a spouse of Jesus. I am looking forward with joy and gratitude to celebrating this jubilee with my Grey Nun community, and with relatives and friends.

“My devotion to the Sacred Heart and to St. Marguerite d’Youville helps me to create a compassionate world as I live each day serving others.”

Sister Bernadette was my brother’s first grade teacher at Holy Angels School, and has remained close to my family to this day!! She and her family has been such a blessing to our lives…I can hear her wonderful laugh like she was sitting right beside me. I thank her for her tremendous service as a Grey Nun…as well as as a friend to our family. The Grey Nuns have had such an impact in my life…from my days at Holy Angels School and then Holy Angels Academy. I am blessed to continue my relationship this day with many, and honored to have kept up with some who have now passed on. To a truly wonderful community of women…and specifically to Sister Bernadette as you celebrate your 60th…with much love and respect, and continued wishes for blessings on your work and your lives.

    With love,
    Linda Spillman Garrity
