The attached article from the magazine The Nation, goes hand-in-hand with our advocacy work against the Death Penalty. Some of the ideas expressed in the article may be new and a little unsettling, but very worthy of the read.

I read with great interest the article titled Prison Abolition- a look at the prison situation in American society today.
One reason for the increase in prisoners today is the lack of adequate mental health services in society at large. Many of those in prison have mental health issues which by and large have not been adequately diagnosed and treated. As healthcare becomes less and less affordable to whole populations of people the resulting prison population increases.
Another problem which needs to be examined is what happens to individuals found guilty of crimes who have served their time and are released back into society. With the increase in criminal background checks by employers, few employers are willing to offer employment to those who have been found guilty of a crime. Without the willingness of employers to give an individual a second chance, the individual possibly faces a continued life of poverty, homelessness, unemployment and crime. The cycle continues again and recreates itself in yet another generation.
