Marguerite’s Pantry

Marguerite’s Pantry just re-opened for its 24th year of service to the needy in northern Queens. Located in the basement of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Jackson Heights, the pantry opens once a month to distribute food, diapers, and often children’s clothes.  When appropriate, patrons are directed to other services they may need. The pantry is run strictly by volunteers who shelve food, interview those in need, collect donations and pack up food for distribution.

Each Thanksgiving in partnership with a local motorcycle club, turkeys are distributed to local families and at Christmas, children receive toys!

We are grateful for all of the volunteers, faithful benefactors and organizations who continue to make this all possible.  Don’t forget to “like” their Facebook page  for updates and inspiration.  Submitted by Sr. Anne Marie Beirne

Magnificat

Many thanks to Kathy Sproel, a new employee at Holy Redeemer Health Care. She conducted a sewing class with the Magnificat Community.

Sr. Mary Sue Thomas is pictured here with Kathy, very intent on her work.

The little pillows they were making will be given to the Holy Redeemer Cancer Center to distribute to breast cancer patients as arm rests. The residents of Magnificat were pleased to take part in this special outreach to the patients.       Submitted by: Jane Selinske

It’s Sock Collection Time!

Once again, we will be collecting socks in celebration of the Feast Day of St. Marguerite in October. Donations will go to The Joy of Sox which distributes socks to the homeless.

In addition to our friends at ReMax and upstairs neighbors, this year we are collecting socks at Holy Redeemer Lafayette and also at Redeemer Village, as well as St. Andrew’s in Newtown. We are so grateful to our friends and neighbors for joining us in this effort. Socks will be collected during the first two weeks of October ending with the Feast Day of St. Marguerite. This is a wonderful way for us to support the homeless which was such an important part of the work of St. Marguerite right from the very start.

If anyone wishes to make a donation by check, please make it out to THE JOY OF SOX a non-profit in Wayne, PA. You can download a flyer here.

With Honors

Two of our Sisters will be honored in October for their work and support of ministries close to the hearts of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. On October 5, Sr. Eileen White will be honored for her ministry at Dawn’s Place (where she continues to volunteer!). At the Gerard Place Gala, in Buffalo on October 10th, Sr. Denise Roche will be honored with the Community Leader of the Year award. Details next month!
