The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart weep tears of sorrow and shame at the loss of three more black lives at the hands of white power. As a nation that claims Judeo-Christian roots and values, we have nonetheless lived for much of our history blinded by self-interest and privilege. At this time of protest against systemic injustice, we stand with those who demand change.
The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart pray for the family of George Floyd, and the many others who have died victims of racism. We pray also for those who killed them and for the courage and humility needed by all citizens to admit that we are not “one nation under God with liberty and justice for all.” Not yet. Finally we pray for all of us that we have the integrity to speak out for truth and justice in the face of injustice and the knowledge and wisdom to correct the systems and attitudes that oppress people of color and keep us a racially divided country.
