Action: Prayer Weekend

Written on: October 14, 2020

For many years we have joined Jubilee USA in prayer on this weekend, and we will once again to join them October 16-18. This is the  weekend the major International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings are being held that will make decisions determining whether or not tens of millions of people will enter extreme poverty or if hundreds of millions of people in the US and around the world can exit poverty.

As coronavirus wreaks havoc around the globe and induces a global economic crisis on par with the Great Depression, we need to make a strong call for debt cancellation, relief and increased aid to address the crisis in developing countries.

This year’s theme is Curing Poverty, Inequality and the Coronavirus. We are asked to pray for the defense of the world’s most vulnerable during this critical time by expanding debt relief for the 73 poorest countries and move forward more aid for developing countries.

The United Nations estimates that 265 million more people are facing famine due to the coronavirus crisis. The International Labor Organization says 400 million jobs will be wiped out and the IMF asserts the current economic crisis rivals the Great Depression.

This weekend, we will be joining Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and other faith communities as we pray and act for global policies that put an end to poverty, inequality, and the coronavirus. The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart are on the list of participants sent to decision makers. This list is what moves the campaigns forward.
