Sister Dolores O’Dowd (Sister Dolores Ann) Sixtieth Jubilee

Like many of our sisters, Sister Dolores O’Dowd was taught by Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart in Catholic elementary school. The seeds of her vocation may well have been planted by those childhood years with Grey Nuns at Blessed Sacrament School in Jackson Heights, New York. After high school, she entered the Grey Nun community and earned a B.A. in education at D’Youville College and an M.S. in education from SUNY at Buffalo.

Over the years, in addition to teaching in parish elementary schools, Sister Dolores served God and God’s people as a pastoral assistant and later, in both youth and senior citizen ministries. In 1979, in Albion, New York, she began a thirty-year ministry to the incarcerated at the Albion Correctional Facility. At the same time, she was Coordinator of the County Jail Education Program and the Migrant Education Program at Brockport State College, for six years. Sister Dolores brought the hope and light of the Word of God into the harsh reality of prison cells until her retirement in 2009.

In retirement, Sister Dolores serves as a Spiritual Care Provider at Supportive Care Hospice in Orleans, New York.

A time of rejoicing!  A time for gratitude!
“My cup overflows” with gratitude for the people who have helped shape my life during the past 60 years, whether in a brief encounter or over a lifetime.  You who challenged and encouraged me, stood by me in pain and joy, you the young and old whose lives have been an inspiration. For each of you, I offer my gratitude and prayer that our interactions may have also given you a sense of the graced moments of God’s love and joy.
