Sister Jean Scharf (Sister Mary of the Cross) Sixtieth Jubilee

Written on: April 22, 2021

As an eighth grader at St. Girard’s School in Buffalo, Sister Jean Scharf was unaware of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart until a priest came to speak to her class about vocations. He spoke of the Grey Nuns and their high school for girls, Holy Angels Academy. Sister Jean was curious and made an appointment to visit.

The warm welcome she received from the Grey Nuns at Holy Angels convinced her that this was where she belonged. Her years there with the Sisters inspired her to join the Grey Nun community. After entering, she earned a BA in History at D’Youville College and an MS in Elementary Curriculum at SUNY, Buffalo.

Over her years as a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart, Sister Jean has shared her many gifts and her warm, gentle presence in diverse ministries.

She was a teacher for more than 20 years, an advocate for aging sisters for 8 years, the Executive Secretary for the Office of Consecrated Life for the Diocese of Trenton for 10 years and Secretary to the Coordinator of the Yardley Motherhouse community for 3 years.

Sister Jean still shares her gifts assisting with secretarial duties for the Grey Nuns’ Finance Office.

It is hard to believe that I am celebrating 60 years as a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart. A special part of my journey has been blessed by family and Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart.

I am also grateful for all those that I have met along the way. There are many who shared their faith, love, and support with me as we ministered to others in schools, parishes, and other ministries.

A scriptural verse that has nourished me on my journey is from John 14: 1-2:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still and trust in me.”

Hello Sister, I was looking up names of the sisters who taught me at Blessed Sacrament school in Jackson Heights, N.Y. and I found your name and learned you celebrated 60 years as a Grey Nun in 2021. A late congratulations on your profession. I also remembered you as Sister Mary of the Cross as Janice Nunziata ( in the above comments) and I were in the same class with you as our 5th grade teacher. I still have the class picture! Thank you for being a part of my life and God bless you!

    Dear Jean,
Congratulations on your Jubilee. As I wrote to Sr. Denise one if these days when travel is easier I would like to visit.
I have a daughter who lives in Phoenixville who we have not seen in almost 2 years. Soon, they will be vaccinated and we can spend some time together and I can make a trip to see each of you.
    Blessings,
    Cathy Woeppel Sheedy
