Sister Mary Courts (Sister Joseph Mary) Sixtieth Jubilee

Written on: April 22, 2021

The Germantown area of Philadelphia, and Buffalo, on the shores of the Niagara River, have been the cities where Sister Mary has spent most of her life. Mary, an only child, attended Cardinal Dougherty High School in Philadelphia where she met the Grey Nuns and knew that religious life was where God was calling her.  After only a few years as an elementary school teacher, she accepted the role of Principal at Our Lady of the Assumption School in Strafford, PA, and at Holy Angels School in Buffalo. When her parents became ill and needed care, she lived with them while teaching religion at Grey Nun Academy.  When she accepted a principalship at St. Gregory Parish in Buffalo, she moved her parents there so that she could continue to care for them. As Pastoral Assistant at Holy Angels Parish, she brought her loving care and concern to many just as she had with her parents.  She lived for many years with her dear Grey Nun friend Sister Faith Marie, before returning to Philadelphia to share life with other Grey Nuns at Holy Redeemer Lafayette.

As I reflect on 60 years as a Grey Nun, I realize how blessed I am. I am grateful for my parents who nurtured me and for the Community’s support for me in later years. I cherish the many friends I have made over the years and marvel at the opportunities Divine Providence guided me through. I am most grateful for people who have helped me grow spiritually and develop a closer relationship with God.   May Marguerite’s spirit continue with me over the years!
