Two cities share the locale for Sister Rita Margraff’s life journey: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Buffalo, New York. Born in Philadelphia, Sister Rita was brought up in a loving home, along with her brothers John and George. Taught by the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart at Melrose Academy in Philadelphia, she went on to study mathematics at D’Youville College in Buffalo, a Grey Nun institution. She entered the Grey Nun community after college and went on to earn a M.A. in mathematics at Villanova University.
Sister Rita has brought her intelligence, organizational skills and compassion to diverse ministries. She taught mathematics at Melrose Academy and at D’Youville College, served as registrar at D’Youville College and as assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs at the College of New Jersey. She was President of the Sisters Council of Philadelphia and a board member of the national Religious Formation Conference. Sharing her gifts with her Grey Nun community, Sister Rita has served as Director of Novices and Motherhouse Administrator. Currently, Sister Rita serves as Assistant Director of Development, a friendly and helpful liaison to our friends and benefactors.
Jubilee is a time to remember and a time to envision the future. I remember how my God has “carried me all along my journey until I arrived at this place” in my life. I began the journey with loving parents, have been surrounded by a loving and expanding family, have known the love and companionship of cherished friends and sisters in community. My heart is filled with gratitude for my 60 years as a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart. I look forward to wherever the journey may lead in the future – knowing that God will walk with me.

What a fabulous educator! I was so blessed to be taught by Sister Rita at Melrose Academy from 1970-1973. I ultimately became a CPA and hold an MBA in Finance. This is largely due to Sister Rita’s exceptional educational skills. Thank you, Sister Rita, for preparing me for my professional career!
Rosemary Gallagher, class of 1974.
