GNSHappenings- May 2021

Jubilee Celebration in Buffalo: With covid restrictions easing, some Buffalo Grey Nuns and friends came together to celebrate jubilees. Sr. Donna Lord and Sr. Dolores Ann O’Dowd renewed their vows to God as Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heat in a Sunday liturgy celebrated at St. John XXIII parish. Father John Stanton, pastor, highlighted the ministry of the Grey Nuns in Buffalo and Sister Donna’s singing in the parish choir and ministering as chaplain at Mercy Hospital. He remembered that Sr. Dolores Ann was the first person he met when he was assigned to St. Joseph Parish in Albion.
After Mass, Sisters and guests returned to Sacred Heart Center for a delicious brunch. All rejoiced in being able to come together without masks and social distancing and being able to hug! Many memories of entering the convent and life in the novitiate, serious and hilarious, were shared.
Special thanks to the Potsdam Associates who had the Mass offered for Sr. Donna’s jubilee and to Kathy Damon, a book club member, who prepared the delicious brunch.  View more pictures here.

Buffalo Sisters get Vaccinated: We are grateful to Catholic Health LIFE program for vaccinating our Buffalo Sisters, and to LCWR leadership for informing us of this opportunity. Sr. Jean O’Shaunecy was there too, but missed the photo shoot.  Lucky them. View Photos here

Thank You Note:

Thank you to everyone for the beautiful cards, good wishes and gifts sent to me in celebration of my birthday.  I am grateful for your thoughtfulness and kindness.  Sr. Frances Avery

Art Supply Donation: In April, we participated in a collection of art supplies for Safe Harbor. The donation drive was suggested to us by Artis of Huntingdon Valley where 3 of our Sisters reside. When she heard about it, Debbie Adams remarked, “This is a wonderful organization! When my sister-in-law died, her 12 year-old son lived with us and we brought him to Safe Harbor for grief counseling.”  We collected $100 for supplies, plus a few item donations. Thank you for your participation!

New “Plaza” Resident:  Residents at Nativity BVM on Belgrade Street in Philadelphia bid farewell to Sister Julia Lanigan saying that they will miss her. Julia moved mid-May to 2350 Tremont, joining 17 other Grey Nuns who live at the apartment building called “the Plaza.” The Grey Nuns welcomed her enthusiastically and several members of the social club at the Plaza were delighted to meet her the next day at the pavilion pizza party. 1. Anne Odonnell says:

Would it be possible to add the “taken” name of the Sisters as well as their own names in articles/ pictures? It makes it easier to recognize the good sisters. Thank you.
