GNSH Associate News: Our dear friend and Grey Nun Associate, Mary Enslow, was recently recognized in the North Country Catholic, as an outstanding Catholic lay person.
Mary was recognized for her devoted service as an extraordinary minister of Communion. In this service, Mary visits the homebound of her area, but also nursing homes and hospitals.
Mary recalls in the article that, after a terrible car accident, her mother told her she “didn’t have to go to Mass” the Sunday afterwards. But, as Mary said that day and continues to say, “I didn’t have to go, I wanted to go.”
Mary, you are an inspiration to many. We hope your love of God and the Church inspires others in their own prayer and devotional life. You can read the article here, on page 10.
Martin’s Home Nearing Completion: The GNSH, along with other local Congregations, have been working collaboratively to transform the convent building at St. Martin of Tours in Philadelphia, into a temporary residence for refugee and asylum-seeking families. After a glitch with the necessary permits, final preparations are underway for a full opening.
The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, assisted by our co-workers and Associates took care of cleaning and outfitting the kitchen with the necessities such as pots and pans, various cooking utensils and appliances, dishes, glasses and other items for dining. We were also able to contribute some major appliances, and first supplies such as cooking oil, dish soap, and other cleaning supplies. Grant money was received for various projects, such as a craft room with sewing machines. One of the volunteers is an excellent seamstress and is willing to give sewing lessons. There was also a grant to supply the playroom with various toys for children of all ages. A volunteer with an engineering background helped to secure the stairways with a variety of gates to keep toddlers safe. Someone is also working on the garden, creating an oasis of rest for residents and helpers alike. View photos here
Memorial Mass for Sr. Mary Dee Smith: On June 16, we celebrated the life, and mourned the passing, of Sr. Mary Dee Smith. The Mass began with a reflection of Sister Mary Dee’s life by her dear friend, Sr. Mary Joan Elias. The readings and music selected truly captured the loving and caring spirit of Sr. Mary Dee.
After the Mass, it was wonderful to gather for a traditional repast, to continue sharing stories, laughter and a few tears. These simple shared 2 table events- Masses and meals- are certainly among the things we missed the most and are grateful to do again. More pictures from the luncheon are available here.
