Statement on the School Shooting in Uvalde, Texas

Written on: May 26, 2022

Again, so soon after the last tragedy, we mourn the devastating event that took the lives of people, this time in Uvalde, Texas. How can these senseless, painful shootings continue to happen, taking the lives of our unsuspecting, defenseless sisters and brothers? The lives of their families and loved ones are changed forever.

How do we participate in ending these tragedies? Our faith calls us to respond. In the spirit of St. Marguerite d’Youville, let us do whatever we can to provide for those who suffer, to persist in reminding government officials of their obligations, especially to the poor and defenseless, and to use our lives to heal and help those who are broken-hearted and struggling in our midst.

May goodness grow and inspire us all during these times of pain and killing!

May God direct the work of our hands and hearts!

President, Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart

As members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), we share the following statement with which we are in full agreement.

We mourn with the people of Uvalde and all of those who have lost loved ones to senseless killings made easy by the proliferation of guns and the pervasive culture of violence which plague our communities and we call on Congress to take immediate action to end the killing.

We state simply and clearly

The Killing Must End: LCWR Calls for Action to Prevent Gun Violence

Wed, 2022-05-25 15:56 by asanders

Our hearts and prayers go out to those parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, and uncles who lost their precious children and to all who have been touched by the massacre at Robb Elementary School.

Unfortunately, their heartbreak has become all too familiar to students, teachers, and parents across this country. The Washington Post reports that since the attack at Columbine High School in 1999, nearly 300,000  have been on campus during a school shooting. In 2020 firearm related injuries surpassed automobile accidents as the leading cause of death among children and adolescents. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Where is the outrage? How many more children are we willing to sacrifice?

We mourn with the people of Uvalde even as we continue to grieve for those lost to gun violence in Laguna Park, Buffalo, Parkland, Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs, Orlando, San Bernardino, Charleston, Newtown, Columbine, and in countless other cities and towns across this nation.  We mourn the senseless killing made easy by the proliferation of guns and the pervasive culture of violence which plagues our communities.

While there is much to grieve, we know that mourning is not enough. Prayers and condolences, as important as they are, are not enough.

It is well past time that our elected officials stopped listening to the gun lobby and heeded the cries of the people of this nation. It is well past time that we enacted sensible gun violence prevention legislation.

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious calls on Congress to immediately take up legislation that:

    • requires universal background checks and mandatory waiting periods for all gun purchases;
    • bans civilian ownership of high-capacity weapons and magazines; and
    • provides funding to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct public health research on firearm violence prevention.

We pledge to stand with all who seek to put an end to the epidemic violence in our land and to follow the path of peace. Let us never doubt that the deep darkness of these days can be overcome by the radiant light of our lives and actions lived in love.

As a former VESS volunteer (Volunteers for Educational & Social Services) at Sacred Heart School in Uvalde, TX, I support the LCWR’s call to action. I add that age 21 be the legal age for a gun purchase. The children killed at Robb school could be grandchildren and/or relatives of my former students from 1976. VESS volunteers across the country have been touched very deeply by this massacre.

So very sad, another tragic event in this country! I promise to unite in prayer with all to bring these horrific events that could have been avoided! Bills to change and protect this country have been passed thru the congress and denied by the senate… I pray that all their children and loved ones remain safe!!! I will cont5inue to notify all involved to MAKE IT HAPPEN!!! Be brave… prayer is powerful as long as we all do OUR part too!!!!
