GNSH Associate News: In June, Grey Nun Associate Fru Finn shared how the Grey Nuns in Kodiak helped her relationship with God and St. Marguerite d’Youville grow through their influence. It was this growing kinship with St. Marguerite that led Fru to propose the St. Marguerite d’Youville award. First given in 1995, this award is given to an 8th grade graduate each year who exemplifies the spirit of St. Marguerite. Students look forward to being chosen by both faculty and students as the recipient. This immediately became the most highly coveted award given at graduation! A plaque bearing the name of every recipient holds a place of honor at the entrance to the school. The next Grey Nun Associate gathering will be Saturday July 9 at 10:30 am EDT. Sr. Jean Liston will share her faith journey during the meeting. All are welcome- Contact Angel Conicelli for more information about participating in the Zoom meeting, or learning more about the Grey Nun Associates. All are welcome!
Marguerite’s Pantry: The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart began Marguerite’s Pantry, in Our Lady of Fatima Parish, East Elmhurst, NY, to mark the 75th anniversary of their congregation. As we conclude our centenary of foundation, we renew our commitment to support this ministry. Donations are welcome and can be sent through our GNSH Finance office, 14500 Bustleton Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19116. Be sure to mark your donation for Marguerite’s Food Pantry. These contributions will be kept anonymous and will not be included as part of the congregation’s fundraising efforts. Please read Sr. Denise’s letter linking the Pantry with the celebration of the feast of the Sacred Heart here.

Update on Martin’s Home-Submitted by Sr. Diane Bardol, GNSH: The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart were pleased to be able to support the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill in their ministry of providing transitional housing for immigrant women and children. This project, located at the former St. Martin of Tours Convent was eventually called Martin’s Home. Several other congregations of women religious in the Philadelphia area also collaborated in this project. As with nearly all new ministries, Martin’s Home was going along slowly but well until it met with obstacles that seemed to clearly indicate that we needed to either change course or discontinue the project. St. Martin of Tours was no longer available to us as transitional housing. At a meeting on June 5, the feast of Pentecost, Sister Eileen McNally, SSJ, director of the project, filled us in on all the details leading up to the present situation and asked us to enter into a discernment process to decide the next steps. After considerable dialogue, the group came to a firm next step decision. The project would continue as transitional housing for women and children, but would be governed by a board and eventually become a 501 (c) (3) entity. A five person committee was formed to bring this to fruition.
A Special June Birthday: Among elders, one is always ‘ahead’ of the others. In Buffalo, that would be Jean O’Shaunecy. Buffalo Grey Nuns honored Jean at a special luncheon at Sacred Heart Center for Jean’s June birthday. It was a pleasure to be together, to enjoy news, conversation and the delicious food served up by Sisters Donna and Sheila. Gifts and dessert with a touch of Irish-green highlighted our celebration.
