Gerard Place- Caring for the Whole Person

Written on: September 14, 2022

The Buffalo News front page recently featured Gerard Place and how Gerard Place and Our Lady of Victory (OLV) Human Services have partnered to provide needed health services for communities where poverty prevails. The article also gives an excellent explanation of the many causes of poor health in communities of poverty and the need for health equity.

Our community, the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, was one of several Buffalo area communities, members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCSR), whose leadership initiated the Gerard Place project back in 2000. Several of our Grey Nun Sisters have served on the board, including Barbara Schiavoni, Marita Campbell, and Sheila Stone.

Gerard Place is a wonderful example of how religious communities today continue to bring gospel values to our world. All those who embrace religious life share a charism given by the Holy Spirit – to do whatever can be done to bring God’s loving compassion where the vulnerable cry out for help. Collaboration among religious congregations makes possible what would perhaps be impossible for one congregation to achieve.

Attached is a picture of the front page and also a reproduction of the article about Gerard Place and OLV’s partnership and what that brings to this neighborhood.
