Laudato Si’ Meeting: Learning about Environmental Racism

Written on: June 3, 2024

On May 20, 2024, Blair Nelsen of Waterspirit, an eco-spiritual non-profit, delivered an enlightening presentation on “Plastics and Structural Inequality” to our Sisters, Associates, and guests. She explored the topic of environmental racism, and the role it plays in creating polluted, toxic living conditions for poor minorities in the United States, especially in locations like Cancer Alley in Louisiana where the cancer rate is 44 times higher than the national average.

Blair’s speech was a stunning lesson on how structural inequalities and environmental injustices are exacerbated by the plastics production chain in the United States.
