Sister Sally White (Sister Frances Maureen)
Sister Sally White was one of the first Grey Nuns from the South to enter the Grey Nun novitiate 75 years ago, and her gentle southern drawl is still quite evident and charming. She says, “I fell in love with the Grey Nun community all those years ago, because the Sisters were deeply spiritual, refined, and smart.”
She has had a diverse ministry career, which began with her years in education. She taught at Holy Angels Elementary School (Buffalo, NY), Christ the King School and St. Pius X High School (in her hometown of Atlanta, GA), and was the founding principal of St. Jude The Apostle School also in Atlanta. While she loved her work in education, she later felt the stirrings for a new calling toward pastoral ministry. After graduation with a Master’s in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, Sister Sally spent the next 22 years as an oncology chaplain at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta. It was rewarding to minister to cancer patients and their families but a challenging mission. As she explains, “it was a different time than today, in terms of medical choices for patients. They didn’t have the life-extending medical options they have now.” Instead, Sister Sally lovingly sat with the patients as they were dying and sang, prayed, and tried to bring them peacefully to God at the end of their lives.
Sister Sally feels that her religious commitment has deepened even more over the years, as she’s understood more of God’s love. She adds, “the beauty of the Sacred Heart is that it is an expression of God’s love for us. That is why I love it so much. That’s God’s gift to me.”

If you write your Jubilee well-wishes in the comments section below, we’ll be sure to share your message with Sister Sally. Our Sisters love hearing from former students, coworkers, and friends from near and far!
Would you like to donate to the Grey Nuns in honor of Sister Sally’s Jubilee? Your prayers and financial gifts help us to care for our elder sisters, support our sisters in ministry, and enable us to live a life of prayer and advocacy for the most marginalized of God’s people. Please let us know if our Sisters can pray for you, and please pray for us!

Sister Sally White (Sister Francis Maureen) Overwhelmed by God’s Goodness
My dear, dear Sister Frances Maureen first then Sister Sally,
Your presence and voice make everything better!
I’m not shy and scared to talk like I was in your St. Jude’s 8th grade class. I appreciate how you asked me to be on the bus patrol and asked me to be the class monitor when I was in 7th grade I’m sure to try to get me out of my shell. You were the best principal, teacher, nun, Hospital Minister and all around good person!!!!!
You even found time to come to my Mom’s ( Rose Hanley Dashiell 1917-1997) wake and told everyone how my Dad had donated all the officr
furniture to St. Jude’s school. I called her the best Mom in the whole world.
I love telling people how the professors that were also nuns came to D’Youville in 1969 my senior year because the school was having to close because of lack of nuns. And they like me telling that David Hasselhoff (Bay Watch/Knightrider) was in my carpool. And he was always bad and we had to wait by the flagpoles each day
I received my BS Degree in Special Ed (concentration in hearing impaired)from GSU. My freshman year I went to St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans. I loved it and the city but I had had enough of girls school. So I transferred to GSU so I could be with people of all ages, countries an religions.I did my Student Teaching in Douglasville far from Sandy Springs. I decided not to teach. I was working part time at Rich’s and I knew I didn’t want to do that the rest of my life. So I received a contract job at The Cola-Cola Company and stayed there 30 years.(I’ll continue later. Stay tuned.)
Sister Sally,
It was a joy to meet you in Philadelphia back in the days of the Gesu summer program! Congratulations on your 75 years of religious life and thank you for your service and making us all smile every time we saw you!
God’s blessings on you today and always!
Your friend, JoJo Glorioso
D’Youville Class of 1984
With gratitude for your remarkable service and career…may God bless you, Sister Sally!
