Sister Mary Joan Elias

Raised in Buffalo, NY, Sister Mary Joan Elias was educated entirely by the Grey Nuns, whose mission inspired her from an early age. “I loved the Grey Nuns before I entered, and I still love them,” she shares.

Her life’s work unfolded in education, where she dedicated 52 years—21 as a teacher and the remainder in administration. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from D’Youville College, began her master’s at the University of Pennsylvania, and completed it at the University of Buffalo.

Sister Mary Joan served in schools in Lowell, MA; Ogdensburg and Eden, NY; and King of Prussia, PA, before settling in Baltimore, where she spent 42 years. She worked in administration at Archbishop Keough from 1975 to 1989, after which the school merged with Seton High School. She then served as principal of Seton Keough High School for several years. Her passion for education extended beyond academics—she was deeply committed to fostering good character in young people, especially those in need. “Education was a joy for me for two key reasons. Imparting knowledge to young people is crucial,” she reflects, “but they also gave me life. It was a privilege for me to be able to help them.”

Beyond the classroom, Sister Mary Joan’s dedication to social justice led her to co-serve on the board of Asylee Women Enterprise alongside her good friend Sister Mary Dee Smith, helping refugee women find safety and stability in the United States. Even in retirement in Philadelphia, she remains active in community life, offering care, companionship, and home-cooked meals to other Sisters. She also serves on the Laudato Si’ Steering Committee, supporting the Grey Nuns’ commitment to care of the earth as outlined in Pope Francis’ encyclical.

Reflecting on her 75th jubilee as a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart, Sister Mary Joan says, “I look back, and I just thank God for all the blessings given to me. I’m blessed with wonderful Sisters and a huge family that I love. It has been a beautiful life.”
