Reflection on the Life of Sister Mary Joan Elias, by Sister Eileen Spanier
I had the great fortune of knowing Sister Joan for a decade-plus. It would be impossible to quantify the collective impact that Sister Joan had on family, friends, and colleagues. Grace, intelligence, and kindness were just a few of Sister Joan’s hallmarks, and how she acquitted herself as a citizen of the world. And Sister Joan was without passions; she loved her Ravens and Orioles. But among the many things that made her endearing, perhaps the one she was best known for was her culinary artistry. Preparing and sharing a meal with those dear to her was yet one more way she drew from her deep well of humanity.
